Introduced in 1999,
Virginia Tax Credit Experiences
A Decade of Success

LEOLA, PENN. – Since 1988 Mike Morris has been selling and installing Clean Burn used-oil recycling furnaces throughout Virginia. Sales have been exceptionally steady for the past decade thanks to the Virginia Recycling and Pollution Control Tax Incentive Programs that was launched in 1999.

“Even in a weak economy, we continue to see strong sales thanks to the tax credit from the state of Virginia,” says Morris, owner of Morris Distributing in Verona, Va. “The Virginia tax credit reimburses a business up to 50 percent of the purchase price of a waste oil furnace. That makes a dramatic investment difference for businesses.

“Companies are interested in this tax credit because they can save up to $5,000 by installing a Clean Burn furnace that will also save them on energy bills and eliminate the cost of hauling away used motor oils. That incentive has boosted our sales this year and for the past 10 years.”

As the world’s leading manufacturer of used-oil furnaces, used-oil boilers and used-oil recycling centers, Clean Burn helps businesses generate free heat from used-oil commonly found in all types of combustion engines. Millions of gallons of used-oil are recycled worldwide each year with Clean Burn units.

Recycling Success in 2009
As an example of his success, Morris relays that during the last quarter of 2009 he saw a widespread array of businesses purchasing Clean Burn units from him. More than 30 “mom and pop” auto repair centers invested in the furnaces, as did several car dealerships, motorcycle dealers, junkyards and trucking companies.

“Wherever you have large quantities of used motor oil, you have the potential to save energy by recycling,” says Morris. “We’ve sold these cost-effective units to heavy construction contractors, trash collection companies, equipment rental yards and even a poultry farmer. The Clean Burn furnaces are a wise, long-term investment for any location producing 500 gallons or more of used motor oil on a yearly basis.”

Morris believes one of the most sensible uses of a Clean Burn unit now takes place at the Fairview Beach Yacht Club in Fredericksburg, Va. The marina purchased the unit in late 2009 to recycle more than 500 gallons of used oil that is generated yearly during servicing of 100 boats and dozens of equipment pieces at the yacht club.

“The Clean Burn furnace is a great investment that will pay for itself in about three years,” says Bucky Potts, manager at the yacht club’s maintenance shop. “The Virginia tax credit was a huge incentive for us to purchase the unit. We paid about $8,000 for the furnace and installation, and we’ll receive 50 percent of that back from the state.

“This Clean Burn furnace allows us to forgo the expense and potential hazards of hauling away used motor oil. Instead we’re recycling that oil into heat for our shop. That’s a ‘win-win’ investment that I’d recommend to any marina nationwide.”

For additional details on the Virginia recycling tax credit of up to 50%, visit http://www.deq.state.va.us/waste/rtaxinc.html. For information on Morris Distributing, go to www.morrisdist.com.

There are 80,000 Clean Burn functional furnaces and boilers located throughout the world that burn millions of gallons of used-oil each year on-site, at the point of generation. This volume of used-oil would otherwise be transported on highway systems and pose a considerable risk to spills and/or contamination to the environment.

Clean Burn is an ENERGY STAR® partner. The company holds numerous industry certifications and works with the U.S. government, the Environmental Protection Agency and various associations to help coordinate the establishment of standards and regulations related to heat recovery and recycling efforts involving used motor oils. The scheduled segment at 9:00pm EST features step-by-step details on the assembly of Clean Burn units used by companies worldwide to recycle used motor oil.

“We’re honored to be included on this popular show that’s seen worldwide, says Morris Mantey, vice president of marketing for Clean Burn. “Our products allow businesses to recycle used-oil on-site to generate heat in an environmentally-friendly process that is a ‘win-win’ for every user. A Clean Burn customer reduces the risk of spills and contamination to the environment, significantly lowers their fuel costs, and recoups their investment on the unit within a very short time.”

Now in its 13th season, How It’s Made can be seen worldwide on The Science Channel with repeat segments on both The Science Channel and The Discover Channel. The show is translated into 30 languages and features intriguing segments that showcase how different products are constructed.

“We’re excited to have our products and technology featured on the series 6, episode 15 show,” says Mantey. “We believe the segment will help us educate people about both the environmental savings and the substantial cost savings businesses can experience annually on their fuel bills by recycling used-oil.”

Typical businesses employing Clean Burn products to recycle used motor oil include automotive dealerships, automotive service centers, fast lube centers, truck fleet service centers, car washes, and operations using large agricultural equipment. Clean Burn products are also used in the industrial/marine industries, the recreation motor home industry and in waste management/pollution control industries.

“Any facility that generates used-oil on-site has the potential for significant savings with Clean Burn systems,” says Mantey. “The return on investment is tremendous and the reduction of risk to the environment is significant.”

Clean Burn Products
Based in Lancaster County, Pa. since 1979, Clean Burn manufactures a variety of heating systems to help small and large businesses recycle used-oil on-site, and to provide free heat while preserving the environment. Products available from Clean Burn include:

LEOLA, PA – Look at the numbers. In February of 2008, Downtown Ford Lincoln Mercury in Canton, Ohio paid $9,600 for gas to heat their enormous facility. One year later, they paid just $169 for their February of 2009 gas bill. What made such a dramatic difference? The addition of six furnaces and one boiler from Clean Burn that now recycle the company’s waste motor oil and turn it into free heat.

“We did 27,000 oil changes in 2008,” says Brad Black, owner and general manager of Downtown Ford Lincoln Mercury. “That’s a massive amount of used motor oil that we previously paid to have hauled away. Then we got smart. We worked with Gingerich’s Clean Burn to install units that recycle the used motor oil and provide us with free heat.

“There’s more than 35,000 square feet of space in our showroom, body shop, parts department, tire center, service area, quick lube center, waiting rooms and offices. A year ago it cost almost $10,000 to heat that space for just one month in the winter. Now it costs us a tiny fraction of that amount.”

Black, who believes the Clean Burn units will pay for themselves in under two years, feels good about his company’s investment. “This technology is fantastic,” says Black. “We’ve reduced the transfer of used motor oils on our highway systems and the potential hazards associated with transporting that oil while taking positive steps to help the environment. And, we have already saved tens of thousands of dollars in heating bills. I thought about making this investment years ago, but wanted to wait for better technology. I’m so glad I did. The Clean Burn units are paying back big time!”

Located at 1423 West Tuscarawas Street in Canton, Ohio, Downtown Ford Lincoln Mercury was started in 1985. The state-of-the-art dealership is happy to share the good news about their recycling efforts. “We’re telling everyone that comes into our Quick Lube Center exactly what we do with their used motor oil and how we’re helping keep the environment healthier in our area,” says Black. “That messaging has had quite a positive impact on our customers and our employees.”

Gingerich Clean Burn, which has sold Clean Burn units throughout Ohio since 1981, applauds the auto dealership’s investment in the recycled motor oil units. “We were able to provide them with a turnkey solution,” says Clayton Gingerich. “We went in and set up a manifold system that pipes the heat throughout their entire facility. These same units can also bring exceptional savings and benefits to agricultural, municipal government and trucking locations that have a great deal of excess used motor oil on a regular basis.”

For information on Clean Burn units available throughout Ohio, visit www.GingerichCleanBurn.com or contact Clayton Gingerich at 1-800-589-3481.

There are 80,000 Clean Burn functional furnaces and boilers located throughout the world that burn approximately 120 million gallons of used-oil each year on-site, at the point of generation.

LEOLA, PA – When Auto Parts City opens the doors on its new 38,000-square- foot facility in Gurnee, Ill. this autumn, it will do so with a strong “double duty” dedication to recycling. In addition to the automobile parts and materials recycled everyday by the company, Auto Parts City will also recycle more than 24,000 gallons of used oil a year using state-of-the-art waste oil equipment from Clean Burn.

The waste motor oil, coming from the roughly 12,000 vehicles the company recycles yearly, will allow Auto Parts City to heat four different buildings on more than 19 acres of land throughout the cold Midwestern winter months. “We won’t pay a dime on outside heating costs in the future because we’ve invested in waste oil furnaces and boilers to transform waste motor oil into free heat,” says Jay Brosten, vice president of Auto Parts City, Inc. “The older Clean Burn furnace we had at our previous facility has successfully recycled our waste oil for the past 20 years with just regular maintenance. Now, as we grow our company, we’re growing our dedication to recycling the used motor oil we collect every day as part of our commitment to being good stewards of the environment.”

Joe Lewis, president and senior design engineer for Gleason-Elfering, has been working with Auto Parts City since July of 2008 to specify and install the new waste oil retrieval systems. “We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the Chicagoland area during the past decade in the use of waste oil recycling by companies,” says Lewis. “While this is the largest project we’re installing right now, we have bids out right now for other projects with dozens of Clean Burn furnaces. As they become more focused on the environment, Chicago area companies are definitely taking the steps to make recycling a part of their day-to-day activities.

“A decade ago Gleason-Elfering would sell about 20 of these furnaces a year. Now we’re selling almost 50 each year. Businesses are finally catching on to the idea that it actually saves them money to recycle used motor oil with Clean Burn systems rather than paying to have it hauled away.”

At the new Auto Parts City location, a variety of Clean Burn units are being installed this summer. Several boilers and furnaces will recycle used motor oil and provide radiant floor heating to the company’s used parts and tire, fluid evacuation, dismantling and maintenance buildings.

Used oil recovery is just one of the many recycling programs aggressively pursued at Auto Parts City. On a yearly basis, the company also processes and recycles approximately 18,000 tons of steel, 12,000 batteries, 48,000 tires and 36,000 gallons of gasoline. “We’re fully vested in growing our company into a state-of-the-art auto recycling operation,” says Brosten. “Clean Burn is helping us get there. They’ve been a successful ‘green partner’ of ours in the past and we’re looking forward to decades of used motor oil recycling from the new Clean Burn units we’re installing in our new facility.”

For more information on the new operations being developed at Auto Parts City, visit www.21stcenturyautorecycling.com. For additional details on waste oil products available in the Chicagoland marketplace, visit www.Gleason-Elfering.com.

There are 80,000 Clean Burn functional furnaces and boilers located throughout the world that burn approximately 120 million gallons of used-oil each year on-site, at the point of generation. This volume of used-oil would otherwise be transported on highway systems and pose a considerable risk to spills and/or contamination to the environment.

LEOLA, PA – The average low temperature in Tuktoyaktuk is -23 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter months. Record lows have been recorded at -56 degrees. Even in the middle of the summer, temperatures are a chilly 40 degrees. If you’re one of the 870 residents of this hamlet of Canada’s Northwest Territory, you’d better be ready for some cold weather.

Doug Saunders, operations manager for E. Gruben’s Transport Ltd. in Tuktoyaktuk doesn’t let the cold bother him in this hamlet that’s north of the Arctic Circle. That’s because his maintenance facility is always warm and toasty, thanks to used-oil converted to heat in the company’s Clean Burn Used-Oil Coil Tube Boiler.

“We recycle all the used-oil for our heavy equipment,” says Saunders. “We’ve got more than 100 pieces of heavy equipment such as excavators, graders, loaders, trucks, dozers and stationary engines. Our company specializes in industrial construction and maintenance, road work, excavating and grading, and wrecking and demolition. We’ve got a fleet of large machines that require nearly constant oil changes and maintenance.

“The Clean Burn boiler allows us to recycle almost 500 gallons of used-oil each month. We use the free heat generated as radiant air heating in the five-bay garage we operate.”

In business for more than 35 years, E. Gruben’s Transport purchased their first Clean Burn boiler in 1992 and recently replaced it with another unit. “The Clean Burn boiler is critical for our operations,” says Saunders. “It would be nearly impossible — and way too expensive — to safely ship the used motor oil to another facility. By recycling the used-oil on site, we’re able to reap the benefits with a warm shop space … which is important on days like today when it’s -40 degrees outside!”

Clean Burn is an ENERGY STAR® partner.
UL listed for use as a unit heater or central (ducted) furnace, the CB-3250 is ideal for facilities with limited ceiling heights. Designed for the flexibility of being able to ceiling mount, the unit joins the low profile family of the CB-1750 and the CB-2500. The new CB-3250 can recycle 2.1 gallons of used motor oil per hour and is rated at approximately 325,000 BTUs per hour.

“We’ve designed and introduced this new low profile used-oil furnace at the direct request of customers looking for ceiling mounted options with higher recycling capabilities,” says Michael Shirk, president and CEO of Clean Burn. “At just 35 inches high and 121 inches long, the CB-3250 is ideal for areas needing maximum output of heated air from recycled used-oil. This product complies with all EPA regulations and serves as an efficient and reliable environmentally-friendly product for operations producing a significant amount of used motor oils.”

As with all Clean Burn products, the CB-3250 has superior pumping systems that allow the unit to potentially pump oil up to 300 feet with minimum -40 Fahrenheit oil temperature, including drawing oil stored in outdoor tanks. The highly efficient furnace system includes in-line washable oil filter for easy maintenance, along with a vacuum gauge for the filter, wall thermostat, check valve, tank filter, barometric damper, oil line fittings and an oil supply pump. The comprehensive system is available throughout North America.

“With 30 years of experience behind us, we’re not resting,” says Shirk. “We continue to respond to our customers’ needs and develop new products that provide them with a high return on their investment. The CB-3250 is just our latest example of how Clean Burn works both with and for our customers.”

There are 80,000 Clean Burn functional furnaces and boilers located throughout the world that burn used-oil each year on-site, at the point of generation.
